5 Ways Blogging Can Make You a Better Person

When I first began blogging over two years ago, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I started merely as a way to promote the book I had written and thought of it as another chore to squeeze in between an already full writing schedule, three young children, and loads of laundry.

How wrong I was! Looking back, I stand amazed at the ways blogging not only launched my writing career, but also transformed my life. I know I’m not the only one who stumbled into the blogosphere for one reason, only to discover other blessings and benefits as well.
Here are just a handful.

1. No doubt about it: blogging improves your writing

Many of us who read ProBlogger started our blogs with the hope of growing a readership and eventually earning an income. Blogging opened doors for me I didn’t even know existed (Who knew it could be a job?), but it also has done wonders for my writing ability.
Am I the only one to inwardly cringe while rereading some of my earliest posts? Two years into this gig, I now feel much more comfortable in my blogging skin and my virtual corner. The daily act of writing cannot help but improve our skills. With each act of pressing Publish, we gain experience, insight, and feedback we didn’t have the day before. Collectively, this momentum refines and improves our abilities as encouragers and providers of information.
William Zinnser, author of the bestselling On Writing Well, said that “writing is a craft, not an art.” Craft improves with practice, practice, and more practice.

2. All that practice rubs off on your character

Just like a runner training for a marathon, we learn about endurance on the race to better writing. Fitting blogging into an already busy life has taught me both perseverance and self-discipline. It has also thrown insecurity and self-doubt my way, at the same time giving me the urge to overcome them.
Haven’t you had days when you wanted to shut your laptop and call the whole thing off? Days when the stats don’t add up or readers aren’t responding? Yet those of us in this for the long haul, sense a deep conviction—something within that pushes us to keep going. That resolve can’t help but spill over into other parts of our lives.

3. Blogging increases your life span (well, if it encourages you to change your eating habits)

I have the blogosphere to thank for introducing me to the whole foods movement. I’d always attempted to feed my family well, but had never seen nutrition presented in a simple, manageable way until I began following links from one foodie’s blog to another.
Coconut oil, brown rice syrup, tofu? These once-strange substances now feel like familiar friends. I even found the courage to make my own yogurt and become a vegan for 30 days earlier this year.
Bloggers add a personal voice to the nightly news statistics we hear about food, health, and disease. A snapshot inside someone else’s kitchen transformation serves to inspire our own.

4. An active presence in the blogosphere can transform your real-life relationships

There’s no question that I am a better parent since I started my first blog.
As a blogger who writes about motherhood, I expected to share my knowledge and experience with others. But I never imagined the depth of inspiration I would find myself. Whether it comes from a comment someone leaves, a random link that points me to a much-needed resource, or a post that reminds me of the bigger perspective in the midst of the daily grind, there’s no end to the ideas I’ve gathered. My three young kids have the blogosphere to thank for the mother I’m becoming.
On top of that, I now have a built-in community—virtual kindred spirits to approach when life gets tough or questions arise. Our fellow bloggers become friends in every sense of the word, and mentors too.

5. Blogging and social media raise your awareness of global need and give you the chance to respond

Anyone who doubts the power of the blogosophere hasn’t heard of Compassion Bloggers. Comprised of over 30 writers who have traveled to seven countries, Compassion has proven that blogging gives a personal face to massive global issues, releasing children from poverty in the process.
Or consider the example of Love146, a global charity seeking to abolish child sex trafficking and exploitation. My husband serves as CEO of this organization, whose blog and social media presence have sparked a worldwide movement of abolition. William Wilberforce didn’t have Twitter on his side when stirring up advocates against slavery; we do and we can use its power to influence the world for good.
I would never have believed that blogging would become my job, alter my eating habits, improve my relationships, and help me fuel global change. To those who think blogging is dead, let me reassure you otherwise. We’ve only just begun–to grow, to change, to influence, to become better.

浅谈中国人传统姓名结构兼为解决重名问题献策

中国有文化的历史已经几千年，在这几千年里，许多东西经过不断发展完善，已经很成熟，不但成为中华文明的标志和象征，更在现实生活中给人们带来很多方便。古代中国人的姓名，就是这样一种东西。

中国传统姓名结构，主要是由五部分组成：姓、氏、名、字、号，其中“姓”是大的族群所共有，是表示一个人的家族血缘关系的标志和符号。同一个祖先繁衍的后代称为宗族。“姓”的本意是女人生的子女，在母系社会，同一个母亲所生的子女就是同姓；在父系社会，姓则随父亲。

“氏”和“姓”有紧密联系，所以通常把两者合在一起，合称“姓氏”。最早时其“姓”与“氏”不同，姓产生在前，氏产生于后。随着同一祖先的子孙繁衍增多，这个家族往往会分成若干支散居各处。各个分支的子孙除了保留姓以外，另外为自己取一个称号作为标志，这就是“氏”。也就是说，姓是一个家族的所有后代的共同称号，而氏则是从姓中派生出来的分支。姓产生后，世代相传，一般不会更改，比较稳定，而氏则随着封邑、官职的改变而改变，因此会有一个人的后代有几个氏或者父子两代不同氏。另外，不同姓之间可能会以同样的方式命氏，因此会出现姓不同而氏相同的现象。

“名”是一个人所独有的表示个体身份的符号，从产生之日起，一直到现在，它的意义没有什么改变，我们现在人的“名”，仍然是表示独立个体的符号。

“字”的含义有了较大改变。原来，中国人除“名”以外，还有“字”，“字”是在“名”之外的又一个表示独立个体的符号，“名”和“字”的区别在于，前者可以从降生之时起获得，而后者要经过一定的程序。当然，“名”和“字”还有许多内在联系，所以通常把两者合在一起，称为“名字”。

“号”同样是一个人的代表符号，它分为“贺号”和“自号”两种，“贺号”是当一个人达到一定年龄的时候，经过一定程序，由家族长者授予的带有尊敬性质的名字；“自号”则是一个人给自己所起的“名”“字”之外的代表符号。

这五部分，组成了中国人完整的传统姓名，有的人以“姓名”闻世，比如“岳飞”、“朱元璋”等；有的则是以“字”较为著名，比如“稼轩”，则比他的名字“辛弃疾”更有名，还有“郑板桥”，似乎已经有很多人认为是郑燮的名字了；还有的人是以“号”传世，比如“八大山人”，现在知道其真姓名的反而不多了。所以，表示个人身分符号的“名”、“字”、“号”，具有同等的社会效果。

当然，“名字”的构成和内容都是经过了多次发展和演变的。在周朝以前，贵族除了有姓之外，还往往以国、官位为氏。而一般人没有姓，也没有氏。当时只有诸侯国的国君及其家族才有姓，而氏则是赐封了土地以后才有。在夏商周三代，男子称氏，女子称姓。氏用来区别贵贱，贵族有氏，贫民有名无氏。姓用来区别婚姻。同姓不能通婚，姓同氏不同也不能通婚，而氏同姓不同则可以通婚。后来在中国一直保持了这种传统，同姓之人通婚被视为禁忌。直到现代，这种传统才被逐渐打破，但是许多地方民间仍然不赞成同姓通婚。春秋战国时，宗法制度瓦解，姓氏制度也发生根本变革。这时氏开始转变为姓。战国以后，平民也有姓，百姓遂成为民众的通称。这反映了贵族的没落，平民地位的上升。秦汉以后，姓与氏合一，遂称“姓氏”。

而在现代，特别是新中国以后，“号”都取消了，“字”归到了“名”里边，只剩下了一个词“名字”。

但是，经过几十年的社会实践，我们发现，现在单纯又一个“名字”来表示独立个体的身分，存在许多问题，主要表现为重名者日多，给个人的生活带来许多不便。有资料说，全国叫“李丽”的有几百万；而媒体报道，因为同名同姓，一个公民被多次逮捕拘留，原因只是一个犯罪嫌疑人与他同名同姓。

现在，同名同姓问题已经给许多人的生活造成不好影响，已经成了一个社会问题。如何解决这一问题，许多人大代表和政协委员提出了不少意见建议，也引起了社会反响。个人意见，恢复一些优秀传统，允许“名”和“字”并存，是解决这一问题的最好方式。因为，连“名”带“字”同时都一样的几率，要比只有一个“名字”的几率小得多。比如身分证上出现“毛泽东·润之”的标示，这种同名同姓的机会是不是更少一些呢？

所以，建议有关部门通过立法的方式，恢复“字”的地位，并采取个人身分“名”与“字”并列的“名字”构成结构。

It's been raining more than usual lately, I'm not sure is it raining season... I've seen lots of raining scenes of people carrying umbrellas rushing to somewhere. But I never seen anyone walking in rain without raining coat or umbrella...

There are possibilities where situation might be different (for example, she was the one who initiated the sexual intercourse).

Studies on surrounding people, the password to access emails/social networking web sites usually keep to one self without revealing to any people, including the closest one. Obviously the situation is the data misplacement where Cherry find excuses to blame others, or just to ease her emotion.

A young man met a pretty girl through mutual friend while having lunch. A girl named Cheryl was a fine & decent girl, attracted to the young man instantly… a love at first sight you can say.

The young man, Joe tried his best effort to know the girl further from chatting to phone calls…
Joe, as known as a master of creating “coincident scenario”, met up Cheryl in her workplace & successfully impressed her. Cheryl enthusiastically hinted Joe that she was then single & available…

They were then quickly fall into regular dates & Cheryl initiated the relationship quietly without announce to any friend of them.

One night, Cheryl made an excuse to stay at Joe’s place after dinner, saying that her place was spooky. From a man’s perspective, the situation might be too good to be true. Without thinking twice, Joe for sure welcomed her while he’s found something’s suspicious, though.

Cheryl proactively invited Joe to bed; they were having a great night together.

Joe was tough that they were engaged in serious & stable relationship; Joe started to introduce Cheryl to his friends… whilst Cheryl reluctantly did the same thing.

She started to behave differently & showing emotional moods to Joe… & the story begin, they started to quarrel regularly.

Situation become more realistic yet materialistic, which she found that Joe was ‘disqualified’ as a boyfriend as he was poor & own no fancy car… she started to find excuses & reasons to break up with Joe.

The relationship is now on-and-off.

Joe tried his best to save the relationship, without hesitate.

One night, Cheryl called up Joe to meet up at her apartment & telling him that she suffers mental illness, Schizophrenia… Joe was shocked but accepts the truth, thinking that this is his destiny to have a medical-dependant girlfriend.

Cheryl is in fact a mental patient which having regular checkups & consuming pills.

But the situation did not stabilize her all the time.

Joe was frustrated but not regret.

In reality, Cheryl was having an imagination boyfriend which dubbed as foreign student studying in US. But the story did not stop here, she argues that Joe was a third party who destroyed her relationship & her “imagination” boyfriend had temporary left her to study abroad.

Situation now went insane.

Cheryl started to blame Joe had deleted her social networking’s photo albums with her boyfriend & replaced with Joe’s birthday party which they celebrated together, which angered the “imagination” boyfriend.
In fact, Cheryl was never attending any birthday party of Joe & Joe felt guileless “how he manages to hack into her account & deleted pictures then replaced with others?”

Joe proposed to split up, but end up Cheryl crying & begged not to breakup.

Soon enough, Cheryl became emotional & demand breakup whilst Joe agreed without thinking twice as frustration stroke his mind regularly.

Joe, then regain single, started to date multiple girls casually. Cheryl found jealous & tried to lure him with sex to regain his attention.

Technically, a normal healthy young man will not refuse any invitation to have sex from girls, and Joe did the same thing, rationally & emotionally.

Having sex & engaging in a relationship might be two different things for Joe, but it’s not for Cheryl, which she tough that she successfully conquered Joe’s heart.

Reality always stranger than fictions; Cheryl proud to have her “imagination” boyfriend & Joe, she started to date different guys secretly but eventually get caught when Joe found her slept with other guys.

Joe, for sure he did not mind that as he treated her as ex-girlfriend; but it was shameful for Cheryl & eventually she moved to another city secretly without leaving trail.

Two years now passed.

Joe sent her an email just to greet, but he get threatened by Cheryl as the relationship as rape & snatched her from her “imagination” boyfriend.

Old symptoms repeated her-self.

One thought in Joe’s mind: “do not skip checkups & do not skip taking medicine as the situation gone worst…” without reply to her.

周朝正式提出雅言的概念，并且开始向天下推广，作为周朝的标准语。孔子周游列国，教学所用的语言就是雅言。

从周朝到西晋这短时间应该说古汉语变化不大，因为使用人数总体上看是增多的（三国时期人口剧减），成分也还是稳定的，外来的语言不多，但是有些旧名词不用的数量增多，是正常的语言变化。历史到此为止是没有疑问的，古典意义上的汉民族的活动中心是在中原的。但是分歧会出现在五胡乱华时期。

北方汉民族的苦难遭遇文化劫难

衣冠南渡时有部分的北方汉民族随皇族移民到南方，包括皇族，士族，和一部分平民，人数不会超过整个民族的20%。绝大多数的人还是留在了家乡。但是就此认为北方汉族过上了幸福美满的生活就错了，北方汉民族非正常人口减员非常厉害，比三国时期更甚（整个三国时期人口因为战争以及战争带来的饥荒，瘟疫人口非正常减员十分厉害据《中国人口报》一九九五年七月三日资料一五六年（东汉永寿二年）五千六百四十九万二八零年（晋太康元年）一千六百一十六万）。由于西晋统一时，人口刚刚经过大规模的战乱，人口尚待恢复，不料八王之乱接踵而来，五胡趁机争夺中原地区的统治权，他们总人口已经达到五六百万，他们互相间不断爆发战争，由于汉民族的势力基本上退出了中原地区，所以北方汉民族经常遭到屠杀和奴役。汉民族和其他民族之间仇恨极大，所以爆发了冉闵的杀胡事件颁布了著名的杀胡令，以及东晋和后来南朝的北伐，北方的汉民族都是持欢迎态度的，这种现象与其说是汉民族的聚合力倒不如说是北方的汉民族实在是不能忍受异民族的残酷统治了，北方的汉民族文化实际上是在倒退。

南方汉民族的艰苦开拓和文化保留

南方的汉民族花了巨大的精力来开拓原来是蛮荒的地方，人口有一定恢复，特别要指出的是，南方汉民族因为家乡在北方，所以对于保留汉民族的文化特别在意，体现在保留河洛方言，采用汉天子礼仪，诗词的发展。

中國早期文明雖以北方為主，但中國文化視北方為正宗的看法是不全面的。因為自東晉天馬渡江之後，北方文化事業屢遭戰亂破壞，大量知識份子因避戰亂南遷，中國文化中心就開始逐漸南移。
安史之乱及黄巢之乱，又有大批北人逃亡南方。此次南迁虽不比衣冠南渡，却也动静可观。

由於數十年來我們的歷史教科書中難以見到有關漢族遷徙演變的史實，今天青年人中的大多數對於漢族的血統構成以及漢語的流變過程的認識相當靜止、片面、籠統。他們普遍認為，長城以南的中國人絕大多數世代居住在固定的地方，曾發生民族融合的事件；也只是漢族同化了四周的少數民族，而被同化者謙虛地接受了漢族的文化。尤其是語言，幾千年來並未發生過骨子裏的大變化，而是不受外界干擾的平靜地、緩慢地、桃花源式地自然演變：總之，漢族一直是漢族，漢語一直是漢語，今天的北方話是上古華夏「雅言」的正宗嫡裔。對於古漢語和現代北方話之間的差異，他們認為這是由於語言在歷史變化中的自動刷新替換所致，僅僅是漢語內部的新陳代謝。

境内外各种关于汉语发展史的研究论著一致指出，汉语语音在明清易代前后发生过一次重大而影响深远的变化。

入声在北方从此消亡，儿化音发展成熟。此种语言状况，一直延续到了21世纪。今天的南方人，讲不好普通话的最大障碍，还是一个老问题：不会卷舌音，其次是前鼻音后鼻音分不清楚。

明代先后以朱元璋故里的江淮官话和北平地区的华北官话作为官方语言；清代进一步胡化华北官话的语音，大量清洗官话中的古汉语词汇，最终奠定了今天的北方汉语以及日后的普通话的基础。

辛亥革命以后，很多人认识到统一的官方用语的重要作用，于是以原满清帝国首都的北京话为基础、去掉一些土话、并加进少许其他地方的用语。这种统一的「书面化口语」，最终在官话占绝对优势的北洋ZF时代的首都，趁着五四反帝运动的社会激动情绪，击溃了与南方汉语有着血脉联系的古代汉语。南方汉语也因落后、不合潮流而沦为弃儿，成为革命的对象。

北方方言与其他六大方言的最大差异，是缺少入声，其次是有卷舌音、儿化音。汉人语言至少在五胡乱华之前应该是没有北方方言的。唐以前的文献中，也基本不见卷舌的儿化音。

華語和方言，本來就能夠並存。

既然可以同時擁有，何必褒其一貶另一呢？語言之於我們，主要在於溝通，所以實用最重要。廣州和香港“推普廢粵”議論，有其地方理由；未必等同於其他華人社區也須效法“推華語廢方言”。

華語作為全球華人共通的語言，儘量做“規範化”，那是無可厚非；但方言自有自的親切感，就像與自家人溝通一樣，如果說該廢除方言，那等同把“血緣性社團”解散一樣――都屬霸道的心態。

這和我們經常非議“馬來西亞種族主義者要消滅其他語文，統一使用單一語言”有甚麼差別呢？

對我們普通人，語言的目的是一種溝通工具；而且，不同的方言，各有所長也各有特色和神韻。但馬來西亞華人學術界和教育界就常有“泛學術化”的毛病，甚麼都想要“統一化”和“規範化”，本來多姿多采的東西，在經他們要求規範化後，都變成單調起來。

閣下喜歡做學術研究是閣下的事，別人未必需要陪著你玩。炎黃子孫的世界已經有一個放諸四海而皆同的“華語”，方言再如何被推廣，也不見得會破壞華語，所以，幹嘛要廢除方言？同生共存，豈不更多姿多采？

有些學校老師很抗拒學生講方言，聽到學生講方言比講粗口更激動。我覺得這種老師一來矯枉過正，二來神經過敏；學校有權規定學生上課期間必須使用華語，但沒有權力強制學生在校園範圍內不得使用方言。否則的話，等於是“誤導學生以為‘方言’是一種偷偷摸摸見不得光的語言”。

愛護華語的人，沒有必要去打擊方言的學習；而維護方言的人，也沒有必要去抗衡學習華語。

或許有人認為母語是母親的語言（字面上直接翻譯），或者是自己從小第一個接觸的語言（字典裡查出來的），但被聯合國教文科組織（UNESCO）廣泛認為並公認的母語定義是祖先所使用的語言。

若我們以大多數人所接受的定義看來，華語（國語/中國國語/北京話）其實只是北京人的母語，不是大馬華人的母語。

我們本身的中國南方漢語-方言才是大馬華人的母語。因為我們的祖先並不懂得華語。

這包括福建話（正確叫法為閩南語），客家話，廣東話（正確叫法為廣府話/廣州話），潮州（正確叫法為潮汕語），海南話等等。

新加坡在SARS肆虐期間破天荒的開設新電視頻道並播出方言資訊節目供老年人收看的做法已證明了華人的母語不是華語這一點。

我曾經做過調查，中港台的華人都沒有人認為華語是華人的母語。上海人說上海話是母語，汕頭人認為汕頭話是母語。這種聲稱華語是華人的母語的情況只出現在南洋（大馬及新加坡）。

眾所週知，方言是華社的重要資產之一，是承載及孕育了中國南部漢文化的重要語言。很震驚的大馬及新加坡華人社會普片上卻有壓制方言發展/運用的現象。

同樣類似情況也曾發生在中國內地及台灣。學生在學校講方言被打斷牙，中國第一大城市-上海因為被禁止而沒有上海話的廣播等等方言被打壓的故事層出不窮。但經過社會的覺悟，這種情況已有所改善。

馬來西亞及新加坡很多華裔都有一種會造成方言消失的嚴重錯誤觀念。那就是要華人團結就必須大家講同一種語言。因此方言必須被斬草除根，或讓它自生自滅。這種觀念與大馬華社堅持捍衛華教的理念是自相矛盾的。

大馬華社反對單元化教育原因是國民團結不能建立在語言統一的基礎上。印尼的排華暴亂也證明了語言統一不能團結各族。

但不偏不倚，華社本身卻在內部自行推行 “多講華語，少說方言”的運動。這是非常諷刺的。

南方漢族刻意打壓自己的母語是全世界史無前例的，我們已成為一個刻意打壓自己族群語言的罕見族群。

更有人更錯誤認為方言不是一種語言，原因是它無法使用漢字寫出完整的方言漢字。這些人認為只有北京話才能寫出漢字來，

他們並不知道我們所使用的國語/華語早期也一樣無法使用漢字寫出北京話的文字來。北京話只是1932年被中國民國政府投選為國語而已。

在此之前，北京話/華語也不過是北京人的地方口頭語。跟閩南話，廣府話沒什麼兩樣。

由於古代的漢人時是用文言文來書寫的。口頭的語言（白話文）基本上是不存在的。很多華語字如：“什麼”，“哪裡”等等在古時候也是不存在的。因為以前的人是把“什麼”寫成“何”，“哪裡”寫成“何處”（文言文）。

自從革命後，人們放棄使用文言文而改用白話文。這時候，北京話就面對了問題。平時口頭上所講的“什麼”，“哪裡”都無法使用漢字寫出來。（這個問題就好像現在的方言，很多人都沒法用漢字寫出方言字來一樣。）

中國政府把北京話設定為國語後，就開始製造北京話的漢字。“什麼”，“哪裡”等等字就這樣被製造出來。所以說“北京話/華語”的漢字是近代才被製造出來的，以前也是一樣跟福建話，廣東話等等方言一樣，寫不出字來的。

粵語也是一樣。現在的香港人也開始製造出粵語漢字，把“yat di di”寫成“一DD”，“dim kai”譯音寫成“點解”。

閩南語也開始有了自己的寫法，“不必”寫成“免、毋免”，“較大”寫成“　大”等等。

由於沒有人著手指造方言漢字，所以很多人都以為方言無字可寫。卻以為只有華語可以用漢字寫出來。這是錯誤的！北京話/華語以前也還不是一樣寫不出字來？只因為它成了國語必須有文字來承載它，推廣它，語言學家才極力製造出北京話的漢字來。

一大群不懂得講自己母語（方言）的年輕人開始充斥了華人社會。

母語=華語的錯誤概念已根深蒂固的藏在他們的腦海裡。

這得拜新加坡媒體全面封殺方言所賜。華校教師刻意貶低方言，說方言是粗俗的，還禁止學生講方言的做法也為此推波助瀾。父母拒絕與孩子講方言的行為更是元兇之一。

我們可以了解華教人士聲稱華語是母語的苦衷。因為只有把華語當成是母語才能為華教在大馬爭取生存空間。但許多人卻被這種思想所“塗污”，並人云亦云地把華語當成母語。

從馬六甲及新山的華人社會語言轉變看來方言漸漸式微的情況越來越嚴重。這種情況最嚴重的地區是在南馬（馬六甲及柔佛）。

馬六甲40，50年代是一個福建人居多的城鎮，幾乎到處都可以聽到人們說福建話。福建話的普遍程度比起今天今日的馬來西亞北部有過之而無不及。甚至有人說不懂福建話就很難在馬六甲生存。

可是馬來西亞有個華文教育鬥士（沈慕羽）就在福建話巔峰時期開始推普，極力推廣華語。在他過分的推廣華語後，福建話到了今天今日已經式微。

今天的福建話已經不是馬六甲華人的日常溝通語言，它的命運已經到了瀕臨消失的厄運。

另外一個例子：新山作為馬來西亞南部通往新加坡的邊城，曾經是潮汕語的天地。它的普遍性也是到了人人都懂，無人不曉的。

經過新加坡政府誤導性推廣華語的口號，如“多講華語，少說方言”，“Mandarin - a window to Chinese culture”的誤導下。

加上新加坡全面封殺方言，從電視媒體，學校，到日常生活，新加坡都對方言進行開刀手術。甚至，聽前輩說，李光耀政府在推廣華語之時，連老年人也需要在菜市場買菜時說華語。

南馬人也受到新加坡政府政策的影響，潮汕語漸漸與社會斷絕關係。直到今天，新加坡的華人都非常洋化，在華語不精，方言不通的情況下，新山年輕人也是一群不懂任何方言的“新新人類”。

最近，國營電視台全面禁止粵語節目的做法並獲得華社領袖的全面支持。這證明了這些領袖缺乏了中華文化的了解及文化消失的警覺性。

根據大馬潮聯會在一本冊子中引述國家統計局於1996年發表的華人方言族群人數，

排第一的是閩南人（福建南方），佔近160萬人；
第二是客家人，佔108 萬餘人；
第三是廣府人，佔84萬餘人；
潮州人第四，佔52萬餘人；
閩北人（福建福州）22萬7000多人；
海南人近17萬；廣西人近7萬；
福建興化和福清人9萬5000人；
另其他外省籍人士佔6萬6000多人。

綜觀全馬，福建話（閩南話）是大馬最強勢及最多人使用的方言，接下來是廣東話（廣府話）。但其他方言如客家話，潮汕話，海南話已越來越邊緣化，甚至是瀕臨消失。其中客家話被邊緣化的情況最為嚴重。

這是很諷刺的，因為從以上的調查報告看來，客家人是大馬華裔族群裡的第二大組群。現在僅存的客家話區是沙巴州的幾個人口不多的客家小鎮（Kota Kinabalu 除外）。年輕客家人拋棄自己的語言程度非常嚴重。北馬客家人講福建話，中馬客家人講廣東話。其他的方言族群的情況更加堪虞。

有鑒于此，“華語並不是母語”，“推廣華語，維護方言”的新觀念必須被華人接受。這種社會醒覺是防止方言絕種的最基本要素。

我不是在反對華語作為華人的共同語的地位，但有華語沙文主義的觀念也是錯誤的，極力推廣華語的當兒也需要保護方言。我們需要把華語推廣給不懂華語者，但也更需要推廣方言（母語）給不懂方言（母語）者。我們必須記得華語作為全世界華人共同語的地位是無法取代的。但把共同語當成母語也是錯誤的。

方言從以前的擁有地方政府正式媒介語，教學/私塾教學媒介語，每個人民溝通的語言地位，淪落到現在的“只能在街上，家裡講的語言”，甚至連電視台也要開始朝向使用華語的目標。許多家長在家裡也放棄了跟孩子講方言的傳統。方言地位已經被逼入了死衚衕，華社已經沒有給方言生存的空間了。

一個從擁有正式崇高地位的語言，在短短的70年內退居到只是在家裡使用的語言是很可悲的。語言專家也認為沒有法律地位的語言將會在全球化的年代迅速消失。

替弱勢語言在媒體，政治，教育領域尋找生存空間是聯合國教文科組織（UNESCO）極力挽救弱勢文化及語言所作出的努力之一。方言瀕臨消失是我們想見到的嗎？

南方漢人的母語的遭遇就是因為1932年中國政府投選國語後就被判死刑了嗎？

在此，華社所擁有的會館宗祠也需做出努力，別再天天籌錢建新會館，主辦一些無關痛癢的娛樂活動。他們其實身負重任，也就是保護漢文化的傳承及完整性。

在 “華語沙文主義”的不斷增長之下，必須做出製衡舉動。

馬來西亞廣肇聯合總會會長何士昌在華社領袖都人云亦云贊同華語配音電視節目的時候扮演了“眾人皆醉我獨醒”的角色提醒了華社一個重要訊息，那就是別過分打壓自己的母語。

方言是漢文化的重要成員之一，請別讓它消失！

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

2 tablespoons finely chopped shallot or onion (optional)

2 tablespoons flour

2 cups low-fat (1 percent) milk, plus additional for thinning out the creamed spinach if desired

Salt to taste

Freshly ground white or black pepper

2 pounds spinach, stemmed and washed thoroughly, or 1 pound baby spinach, rinsed

Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg

1. Make the béchamel. Heat the oil over medium heat in a heavy medium saucepan. Add the shallot or onion, and cook, stirring, until softened, about three minutes. Stir in flour, and cook, stirring, for about three minutes until smooth and bubbling but not browned. It should have the texture of wet sand. Whisk in the milk all at once, and bring to a simmer, whisking all the while, until the mixture begins to thicken. Turn the heat to very low, and simmer, stirring often with a whisk and scraping the bottom and edges of the pan with a rubber spatula, for 10 minutes until the sauce has thickened and lost its raw flour taste. Season with salt and pepper. Strain while hot into a heatproof bowl or a Pyrex measuring cup, then return to the saucepan.

2. Bring large pot of generously salted water to a boil and add the spinach. Blanch for 30 seconds, and transfer to a bowl of ice water. Drain and squeeze dry, taking the spinach up by the handful. Chop fine, and stir into the béchamel. Add the nutmeg. Thin out with 2 tablespoons milk if desired, or more to taste. Bring to a simmer over low heat, and simmer very gently for five minutes, stirring often. Serve.

Yield: Serves four to six.

Advance preparation: You can make a béchamel and blanch the spinach up to a day ahead; keep separately in the refrigerator. Combine, thin out if desired with a little milk, and heat gently in a heavy saucepan before serving.

Nutritional information per serving (based on four servings): 176 calories; 8 grams fat; 2 grams saturated fat; 8 milligrams cholesterol; 21 grams carbohydrates; 5 grams dietary fiber; 245 milligrams sodium (does not include salt added during cooking); 8 grams protein

I was wandering in a book store; I saw a book which attracted my attention and curiosity… and I picked it up and read.

It’s “Larousse Cocktails” by Fernando Castellon.

People like me (like to taste some drinks but not an alcohol addict) would find this book interesting… interesting not about the exotic cocktail’s name but the descriptions/intro/short story of every drinks inside.

One cocktail named “Corpse Reviver” caught my eyes with an impressive brief introduction: “Strong enough to wake the dead”

The digital age makes DSLR very common and affordable to most people, from hobbyists, amateur to pro photographer.

It may be a good phenomenon, and may be another way round, especially in such a blurry, grey-area, and hard-to-define-with-single-word-description era.

What I meant are: Perverts and Photographers.

Pardon me if I’m too rude, but, yes, it’s fucking true.

Inner pervert might not noticeable, unless it’s become a hobby, a hobby that make public. Psychologically speaking, pervert is a psycho. LOL. It’s better to consult a psychiatric rather than turn it into a so-called hobby, aka photography.

It might be fine if keep that personal.

I do not mean that all photographers are perverts. I repeat. Not all photographers are perverts.

In such an enthusiastic, obsessed photographic-centric atmosphere, we are able to see wide range of photographic ideology, from artistic to realistic, portrait to landscape, human to animal, exotic to erotic…

Again, psychologically speaking, we may able to guess or reveal a personality from… hobby.

I am sick of encounter those so-called amateur photographers whom focus on girls' body rather than beauty. But again, they will argue that’s art! I do not believe that so called soft porn is a proper art.

House infiltration

You came back from weekend vacation, found that your house was ‘infiltrated’ by possible your friends or colleagues. What would you feel? It’s definitely not good and not happy, and… fucked up.

I came back from vacation, traveled back from long way, reached my home… and now the story begins…

Everything’s look good, presumably from the outside of the house.

When I was trying to open up the door, the lock of the sliding was forced opened, and broken. No one has any idea how it happened.

I managed the open the sliding door… now second chapter comes…

A table was set up in the middle of living area, messed up with snacks and few bottles of Jack Daniels, empty bottles… presumably someone has had a good time here…

I’m not staying alone, the house also occupied by a friend of mine.

Feeling uncomfortable, turning on my desktop PC in living area… it was affected by malware and viruses… surprised that my PC was used to browse some inappropriate web content, a.k.a. porn sites.

I tried to calm myself down and running a full anti-virus scan for my desktop to hope to clean up those viruses… luckily I managed to do so.

Guess what, now I found something in the crime scene… its Chinese-named medicine (I have no idea to remember it), to cure some upset stomach… and hangovers. Damn! Now I can conclude that not only someone has had great time here, but hangovers.

The story not ended here. I was thirsty and looking for water, I encounter some oily, messy mugs and knife. Yes, it’s knife. Someone must have some skills like a bartender, to cut some probably lime and mix with those whiskeys.

I will go mad while things are not go my way, but I managed to hold myself up on this incident. But one thing really makes me almost mad.

I bought a box full of skin care and some house hold stuff as mother’s day gift, and put it in my room, it was found opened up and checked up like passed through a custom check up.

Lesson of the story, always lock your PC and, your room.

How To Make Sautéed Foie Gras

Sautéed Foie Gras recipe. This easy recipe for sautéed goose liver is served with caramelized apples. The combination makes it an unforgettable alternative appetiser.

Step 1: You will need:	Units:
1 loaf of foie gras (goose liver) 1 granny smith apple , peeled and cut into sections 1 tbsp sugar 2 tbsp oil 15 g butter 2 tbsp flour 1 tbsp chives , chopped some coarse salt some salt and pepper 2 frying pans 1 knife 1 cutting board 1 spoon 1 tray 1 spatula	Serves: 2 to 4 Preparation Time: 5 minutes Cooking Time: 15 minutes

Step 2: Prepare the paté
Cut the liver into slices of about 2 centimetres thick. Next, season the pieces with salt and with pepper. Sprinkle with flour on both sides. Don't keep the liver out of the fridge for too long. It will get too soft and be difficult to work with. Place the seasoned pieces onto a tray.
Step 3: Prepare the apples
Place a frying pan onto a high heat. Allow it to warm through. Add a little bit of the oil and let it heat through as well. When hot add the apples. Move them around so that they brown evenly. Sprinkle over the sugar. Shake and toss the pan occasionally to assist even cooking. Cook the apples until they become nicely caramelized.
Remove them from the pan and place onto a tray.
Step 4: Cook the liver
Place a second saucepan onto a medium high heat. Allow it to warm through only slightly. Add a drop of oil, then the pieces of liver. Let them cook for about 1.5 -2 mins on each side. Be very careful they don't burn! Cook the livers so that the middle is medium done. Remove them from the pan. Transfer them onto a tray and set aside.
Step 5: Garnish and serve
Spoon the caramelized apples onto a serving plate and put the warm liver on top of the apples. Garnish with a little of the rock salt and chives and serve immediately whilst still warm.

Wear a flat cap, but wear it right

Winston Chesterfield wrote a good column earlier this week on the love/hate relationship many have with the flat cap. I too am a fan of the flat cap, and it is usually my preferred hat. But I think two points are essential here: many men, including me, turn to it because there are few other sensible alternatives; and when wearing a flat cap, material is key.

My hair is thinning (some would put that in the past tense). On a cold day, I need a hat.

Plus, wearing a hat is a much more practical way of keeping off the rain than an umbrella. Take a look at any 1930s Hollywood film that features rain and you will find almost all men sheltering by turning up the collar of their coat. A waterproof coat with a high collar, combined with a hat, is very good at keeping out the rain. You don’t need to carry around a cumbersome brolly and your shoes are drier.

Modern man has an irrational aversion to getting anything wet, even if it is a coat designed for that purpose. Take a hat out next time it’s raining, rather than an umbrella.

So I need a hat, and hats are good. But what are my options? A Fedora, Trilby or other rimmed hat is terribly hard to pull off, particularly when you are on the young side of 40. I think it comes after cigars but before pocket watches in the order of accessories you can get away with as you get older. A beanie makes me look like a teenager. And a baseball cap makes me look like an American freshman.

(I think this lack of reasonable headgear is one reason for the huge turnover in umbrellas. People buy disposable umbrellas because they don’t really want one that is bulky to carry around, or they are afraid of losing. But they have no alternative against the rain because they feel silly in a hat. So we’re doomed to drown in crap brollies.)

A flat cap is the only realistic headgear for those between 21 and 40. It was this necessity that first persuaded me to buy one. But over time I have also learnt lessons about their suitability and propriety. Here, material is key.

A flat cap need not necessarily look like country headgear. It does if it is made of tweed or thick wool in hound’s tooth – even more so if it has large checks on it in bright patterns. As Winston rightly points out, Lock & Co does some marvellous caps, but they are deliberately items of countrywear: they are casual option for a man that already wears a Fedora or other rimmed hat for work. They are deliberately sporty to contrast with the formal brims of the working week.

We are not in that position, and do not need checks or tweed as a result. Instead, I recommend going for corduroy or felt. Both look smoother and smarter. Plus, ape the colours and (lack of) patterns seen on formal headwear: black, grey and occasionally brown.

If you wear a tweed flat cap with a suit you look like an Irish farmer on his way into town. If you wear a smart, black felt hat with a suit (and black shoes, obviously) it is merely your take on a staple formal headwear.

2. Don’t hide behind an event. Make the environment a backdrop, not the focus. Put your personality out there without distractions. Dramatic first dates are a cop-out. The event takes the focus off the people. Thankfully, the economy has neutralized your ability to hide behind your wallet. You have to go back to basics: effort and charm.

3. Always schedule the first date for the daytime. The nighttime has a lot of romantic connotations, and you feel almost forced to be sexy and cool. But going out during the daytime is more relaxed.

Plan a group activity in a quiet location. Then, if it’s not going well, you can be a social butterfly and escape the one-on-one spotlight without being rude. Try an afternoon event at a museum, a car show, an auction or a stop at the neighborhood coffee shop.

Perfect First Date: Bowling
Why it works: It’s a casual, public environment and an activity almost everyone can do (and almost nobody is an expert). You can talk, sit and eat, and you’ll probably end up laughing. It’s low pressure and easy, with nothing to detract from getting to know each other.
Alternate options: A weekend brunch can’t be beat. It’s casual, not loud, a little more relaxed than dinner so you have time to talk. It takes the pressure off what to wear. Plan a picnic or explore a new part of town.

Three Tips for the Perfect Next Date
1. When you’re ready for things to progress (toward the first kiss, perhaps?), make the date a little sexier. The locale should be quieter and allow even more focus on getting close.

2. Switch to nighttime, which automatically makes any date sexier. It increases the intimacy and the chances you’ll get a good-night kiss.

3. Don’t go overboard on the sexiness. Start with an intimate group setting so your date won’t be uncomfortable. You want to be able to switch between interacting with others and being in your own world.

Perfect Next Date: Museum Event
Why it works: Many museums are now having lectures or music on Friday evenings, with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. It’s the perfect venue to converse, commune and snuggle a bit. You’ll have a built-in topic of conversation and can share your thoughts on the evening’s events as a deeper way of getting to know each other.
Alternate options: Go to a sushi restaurant, a cabaret or to hear some jazz. Or pick a lounge where you can dance in the crowd and then go off in a corner and get away.

Rule for the “Next Level” Date
If you want to give the message that you’re a couple, plan a date that’s thoughtful and intimate. Plan a day away at a spa with a couple’s massage. That gives the message that you’re in tune with each other. Or bring your date home and cook a meal. That’s the best way to give the message. Another option is to pick something your date loves and plan a day so you can share it.

Three Tips for Making Any Date Perfect
1. Always have an alternate plan that you can easily jump into if surroundings don’t pan out — like when the local fourth grade is having an event at the bowling alley — or in case your date responds poorly to your plan.

2. When you’re going to try something new, be prepared for it not to go the way you wanted it to go. Get into it and be positive. Don’t make your expectations too rigid.

3. Be able to laugh. Don’t take it too seriously (even if you put tons of effort into it). Dating is trial and error, and it’s supposed to be fun.

I thought it going to ‘die’ soon.

I sent it to my fellow mechanic, with highly expected he will say something like ‘We had tried our best, my son’

Guest what. The real culprits are the rubbers inside the front wheel’s arm which I not sure what its mechanical name is…

4 pieces of old, strained rubbers… strange (or cool) enough to cause the irritating sound.

When economic times turn tough, governments urge their citizens to spend.
Economists think of citizens as "consumers" and rely on them to put their
"disposable income" to work. By doing this they will support the economy,
which translates into higher stock prices.

However, in times like early 2008, when consumers were reeling from the
perfect storm of inflation, a global credit crunch, a global housing market
in decline and concerns about stagflation, there is often a conflict with
the governmental cry for consumers to spend. It's a bewildering scenario.
What's the best course of action for a concerned consumer to take? The
following strategies provide a road map for surviving economic downturns.

1. Don't Buy What You Can't Afford

We all want that designer sweater, leather handbag, or cute sports car, but
most of us just can't afford to make the purchases. There's a simple
solution to this dilemma. If you can't afford it, don't buy it. This is
often the easiest point to understand, but it is one of the hardest to
implement when all those goodies are staring you in the face and all your
credit companies are telling you it's OK.

2. If You Can't Pay Cash, You Probably Can't Afford It

In our credit crazy world, amassing debt no longer carries a social stigma.
Everybody has a car payment, a house payment and credit card payments.
Well, remember what your mother said about everybody jumping off of a
bridge? Just because "everybody" is doing it, doesn't make it a good idea.
Buying something you can't afford now, especially when the economy is
unsettled, can double the pain of paying later. For example, if you
purchase a $450,000 home today and the market goes into a slump and
devalues your home by $200,000, you will be paying the bank twice what the
home has come to be worth. Just because it was easy to get the credit to
buy that home, doesn't mean it was the right time for you to buy in.

3. Paying Interest on Anything Makes Somebody Else Rich

When you pay interest on a purchase, you are overpaying for that item for
the luxury of getting to use it now. The simple act of paying interest
means that the price you are paying to make the purchase is greater than
the sale price of the item. You are giving away even more of your
hardearned money in order to own that item than the manufacturer thought
the item was worth. For example, if you buy a car for $25,000 with a loan
at 7% interest for five years, in the end, you will pay almost $30,000 for
the car. Once you factor in depreciation, you're left with a very cheap car
that cost you thousands more than it should have.

4. If You Are in Debt, stop Spending Money

Sometimes, such as when purchasing a home, the cost of the item is so great
that you simply cannot afford to pay cash. This should be the exception
rather than the rule. When it cannot be avoided, you need to close your
purse and stop spending. Getting yourself further it debt doesn't help your
financial situation. Making a realistic budget in this case is the key to
success. Once you know how much you're actually spending on those daily
trips to the grocery store and coffee shop, you'll be able to find room to
cut costs realistically.

5. Don't Count on Somebody Else to Save You

In times of economic uncertainty, people often think the government will be
able to help them, but unfortunately this is often the time when the
government has the least amount of money and freedom to help its own
citizens. In most cases, the government won't save you, so you'll have to
save yourself. When the economy is in a downturn, you can't just look at
what you are spending, you also need to look at where the money is coming
from. Your employer is facing the same difficulties you are: trying to make
bill payments, balancing the flow of capital, all while sales are slowing.
Just like you, your employer will be looking to reduce its costs, which
could be in the form of layoffs. You could be in big trouble if you haven't
planned for this possibility. The plan here is to start saving now for that
eventual rainy day, and prepare an emergency fund for yourself. If it is
too late to start saving and you already need the money, many financial
institutions will let you defer a payment or two if you prove you have a
smart financial plan to eventually pull through.

When People Don't Spend

But wait! If we're all hanging on to our money rather than feeding the
economy, what will happen? Will stock prices plummet? Will economic growth
grind to a halt? Will we all be poor? No. For a real world example of this,
let's take a look at Japan, where saving more than consuming has been
commonplace in its people's history. While being a net lender is a concept
that the West abandoned some time after World War II, it continued to be
practiced in Japan. During the mid-1970s, Reuters reports that Japanese
consumers saved some 20% of their disposable incomes. During Japan's
economic slump in the 1990s, the Nikkei 225 fell from a peak of 39,000 in
1989 to 16,000 in 1992. Gross domestic product growth averaged less than 1%
per year, but personal savings remained in the double digits. Although the
unemployment rate rose from less than 2.5% in 1990 to just under 5% in
2000, with an average of 3% percent according to the U.S. Department of
Labor, it still remained lower than the rate in most industrialized
nations. The net result? Japan remained a healthy, vibrant, wealthy
country with a poorly performing stock market. If you've got savings and a
smart financial plan, a weak market won't break you.

Live Now Like You Face Tough Times

These five strategies work equally well when times are good, so there is no
need to wait until you are in trouble to start making smart decisions.Your
lifestyle will be characterized by things you can actually afford, such as
a house that won't get repossessed, a car that might not impress the
neighbors but will still get you to work and back, and long, restful nights
free from financial worries. It might not be the fairytale lifestyle of the rich and famous
that corporate marketers having been trying sell you, but at least you
won't have to worry about how to keep up on the payments for a lifestyle
you can't afford.

What are roads in Malaysia used for?
Written by a foreigner residing here. A funny read, humurous but a bit

A guide for expatriate drivers in Malaysia Since arriving in Malaysia in
1997, I have tried on many occasions to buy a copy of the Malaysian road
rules, but have come to the conclusion that no such publication exists
(or if it does, it has been out of print for years). Therefore after
carefully observing the driving habits of Malaysian drivers, I believe I
have at last worked out the rules of the road in Malaysia . For the
benefit of other expatriates living in Malaysia , and the 50% of local
drivers who acquired their driving licences without taking a driving
test, I am pleased to share my knowledge below:

Q: What is the most important rule of the road in Malaysia ?
A: The most important rule is that you must arrive at your destination
ahead of the car in front of you. This is the sacrosanct rule of driving
in Malaysia . All other rules are subservient to this rule.

Q: What side of the road should you drive on in Malaysia ?
A: 99.7% of cars drive on the left hand side, 0.2% on the right hand
side, and 0.1% drive in reverse (be on the look out for drivers
reversing at high speed in the left hand lane of freeways, having just
missed their exit).
Therefore on the basis of 'majority rules', it is recommended that you
drive on the left. However, be aware that only 90% of motorcyclists
travel on the left hand side - the other 10% ride in the opposite
direction or on the sidewalk. Fortunately, motorcyclists traveling in
reverse are rarely seen.

Q: What are the white lines on the roads?
A: These are known as lane markers and were used by the British in the
colonial days to help them drive straight. Today their purpose is mainly
decorative, although a double white line is used to indicate a place
that is popular to overtake!

Q: When can I use the emergency lane?
A: You can use the emergency lane for any emergency, e.g. you are late
for work, you left the toaster plugged in at home, you are bursting to
go to the toilet, you have a toothache or you have just dropped your
Starbucks coffee in your lap. As it is an emergency, you may drive at
twice the speed of the other cars on the road.

Q: Do traffic lights have the same meaning as in other countries?
A: Not quite. Green is the same - that means 'Go', but amber and red are
different. Amber means 'Go like hell' and red means 'Stop if there is
traffic coming in the other direction or if there is a policeman on the
corner'. Otherwise red means the same as green. Note that for buses, red
lights do not take effect until five seconds after the light has
changed.

Q: What does the sign 'Jalan Sehala' mean?
A: This means 'One Way Street' and indicates a street where the traffic
is required to travel in one direc! tion. The arrow on the sign
indicates the preferred direction of the traffic flow, but is not
compulsory. If the traffic is not flowing in the direction in which you
wish to travel, then reversing in that direction is the best option.

Q: What does the sign 'Berhenti' mean?
A: This means 'Stop', and is used to indicate a junction where there is
a possibility that you may have to stop if you cannot fool the cars on
the road that you are entering into thinking that you are not going to
stop.

Q: What does the sign 'Beri Laluan' mean?
A: This means ' Give Way ', and is used to indicate a junction where the
cars on the road that you are entering will give way to you provided you
avoid all eye contact with them and you can fool them into thinking that
you have not seen them.

Q: What does the sign 'Dilarang Masuk' mean?
A: This means 'No Entry'. However, when used on exit ramps in
multi-storey car parks, it has an alternative mean! ing which is: 'Short
cut to the next level up'.

Q: What ! does the sign 'Pandu Cermat' mean?
A: This means 'Drive Smartly', and is placed along highways to remind
drivers that they should never leave more than one car length between
them and the car in front, irrespective of what speed they are driving.
This is to ensure that other cars cannot cut in front of you and thus
prevent you from achieving the primary objective of driving in Malaysia
, and that is to arrive ahead of the car in front of you. If you can see
the rear number plate of the car in front of you, then you are not
driving close enough.

Q: What is the speed limit in Malaysia ?
A: The concept of a speed limit is unknown in Malaysia .

Q: So what are the round signs on the highways with the numbers 60, 80
and 110?
A: This is the amount of the 'on-the-spot' fine (in ringgits - the local
currency) that you have to pay to the police if you are stopped on that
stretch of the highway. Note that for expatriates or locals driving
Mercedes or BMWs, the on-the-spot fine is double the amount shown on the
sign.

Q: Where do you pay the 'on-the-spot' fine?
A: As the name suggests, you pay it 'on-the-spot' to the policeman who
has stopped you. You will be asked to place your driving licence on the
policeman's notebook that he will hand to you through the window of your
car. You will note that there is a spot on the cover of the notebook.
Neatly fold the amount of
your fine into four, place the fine on the spot, and then cover it with
your driving licence so that it cannot be seen. Pass it carefully to the
policeman. Then, with a David Copperfield movement of his hands, he will
make your money disappear. It is not necessary to applaud.

Q: But isn't this a bribe?
A: Oh pleeease, go and wash your mouth out. What do you want? A traffic
ticket? Yes, you can request one of those instead, but it will cost you
twice the price, forms to fill out, cheques to write, envelopes to mail,
and then three months later when you are advised that your fine was
never received, more forms to fill out, a trip to the police station, a
trip to the bank, a trip back to the police station, and maybe then you
will wish you had paid 'on-the-spot'.

Q: But what if I haven't broken any road rules?
A: It is not common practice in Malaysia to stop motorists for breaking
road rules (because nobody is really sure what they are). The most
common reasons for being stopped are:

(a) the policeman is hungry and would like you to buy him lunch;

(b) the policeman has run out of petrol and needs some money to get back
to the station;

(c) you look like a generous person who would like to make a donation to
the police welfare fund; or

(d) you are driving an expensive car which means you can afford to make
a donation to the police welfare fund.

Q: Does my car require a roadworthy certificate before I can drive it in
Malaysia ?
A: No, roadworthy certificates are not required in Malaysia . However
there are certain other statutory requirements that must be fulfilled
before your car can be driven in Malaysia . Firstly, you must ensure
that your windscreen is at least 50% obscured with English football club
decals, golf club membership stickers or condo parking permits.
Secondly, you must place a tissue box (preferably in a white lace cover)
on the back shelf of your car under the rear window. Thirdly, you must
hang as many CDs or plastic ornaments from your rear vision mirror as it
will support. Finally, you must place a Garfield doll with suction caps
on one of your windows. Your car will then be ready to drive on
Malaysian roads.

Q: What does a single yellow line along the edge of a road mean?
A: This means parking is permitted.

Q: What does a double yellow line along the edge of a road mean?
A: This means double parking is permitted.

Q: What does a yellow box with a diagonal grid of yellow lines painted
on !
the road at a junction mean?
A: Contrary to the understanding of so me local drivers, this does not
mean that diagonal parking is permitted. It indicates a junction that is
grid-locked at peak hours.

Q: Can I use my mobile phone whilst driving in Malaysia ?
A: No problem at all, but it should be noted that if you wish to use the
rear-vision mirror to put on your lipstick (women only please) or trim
your eyebrows at the same time as you are using a mobile phone in the
other hand, you should ensure that you keep an elbow free to steer the
car.
Alternatively, you may
place a toddler on your lap and have the child steer the car whilst you
are carrying out these other essential driving tasks.

Q: Is it necessary to use indicator lights in Malaysia ?
A: These blinking orange lights are commonly used by newly arrived
expatriate drivers to indicate they are about to change lanes. This
provides a useful signal to local drivers to close up any gaps to
prevent the expatriate driver from changing lanes. The! refore it is
recommended that expatriate drivers adopt the local practice of avoiding
all use of indicator lights. However, it is sometimes useful to turn on
your left hand indicator if you want to merge right, because this
confuses other drivers enabling you to take advantage of an unprotected
gap in the traffic.

Q: Why do some local drivers turn on their left hand indicator and then
turn right, or turn on their right hand indicator and then turn left?
A: This is one of the unsolved mysteries of driving in Malaysia .

There's a reason for the old tale of the man refusing to ask for directions -- it's true. Never is the difference more apparent than in the case of the oil change. Here's a play-by-play of the man-vs-woman oil change.

Women:

Stop at Starbuck's on the way to the Super-Lube, order a decaf skim latte but go for a dab of whipped cream because you've been good.
Sit in waiting room watching CNN and sipping delicious coffee drink.
Twenty minutes later, pay with AMEX for the Sky Miles and leave with the job done and the whole day ahead of you.

Men:

Go to AutoZone and drop $47 for oil, a new filter, kitty litter, and a talking tire gauge (damned impulse-buy rack gets you every time).
Go home, drive car onto oil change ramps and change into your college game-day shirt, which now feels like a size extra-medium.
Discover you forgot to empty your last oil change from the oil container, so drive to back of Super-Lube and beg them to take your old oil. Get dirty look from 17-year-old punk and tell yourself what you'd do to him if he was 18.
Drive home, back on ramps, then detour to fridge for a cold one.
Gather tools and slide newly-emptied recycling container under oil pan. Realize you grabbed the wrong spanner to remove the oil drain plug, so you decide to use Vise-Grips since you're already on your back.
Unscrew drain plug, but fumble with it and soak forearm in not-quite-cool-yet motor oil. Lose drain plug in recycle container since you removed the screen to use for your failed bio-diesel lawnmower experiment.
Have another cold drink to mourn failed bio-diesel lawnmower experiment and wait for oil to drain from engine.
Look for oil filter wrench, but give up and stab filter with a screwdriver, then twist it off. Install new oil filter, making sure to apply a thin layer of new oil to the gasket.
Almost done, remove oil cap and pour first quart into engine. Quickly realize your forgot to replace the oil drain plug. Race to reinstall plug with wrong wrench and skin knuckles on motor mount. Bang head on A-arm in reaction.
Shoot across driveway on creeper and begin cussing fit. Throw wrenches into yard, then crawl through flower bed trying to find correct wrench for oil drain plug. Time for another cold drink (yeah, we mean beer).
Tighten plug and add remaining oil. Watch wife pull into driveway with the smug look of efficiency on her face. Carry groceries into house. Smile, she bought more beer.

The train has started moving. It is packed with people of all ages, mostly with the working men and women and young college guys and gals. Near the window, was seated a old man with his 30-year old son. As the train moves by, the son is overwhelmed with joy as he was thrilled with the scenery outside.. " See dad, the scenery of green trees moving away is very beautiful"

This behaviour from a 30-year old son made the other people feel strange about him. Every one started murmuring something or other about this son. "This guy seems to be a crack.." newly married Anoop whispered to his wife.

Suddenly it started raining... Rain drops fell on the travellers through the opened window. The 30- year old son , filled with joy " see dad, how beautiful the rain is ..."

Anoop's wife got irritated with the rain drops spoiling her new suit. Anoop said, "Can't you see it's raining, you old man, if your son is not feeling well, get him soon to a mental asylum and don't disturb public henceforth"

The old man hesitated first and then in a low tone replied " we are on the way back from the hospital, my son got discharged today morning , he was a blind by birth and last week only he got his vision, this rain and nature are all new to his eyes. Please forgive us for the inconvenience caused..."

"The things we see may be right from our perspective until we know the truth. Always try to understand the problem better before taking any harsh action".

The Moment

When I see your picture, it’s tenderness of my heart…

When I see you in crowd, I become furious & desperate to meet you again…

For many years, I’m just about to recover… I’m taking too long to heal…

Something for Nothing

Summer, bright day & fine beach…

There were people on the beach; walking, playing beach volleyball, lying on the beach… & me, sitting under the papaya tree… grabbing some soft sand & let them leaking through my palm.

For them, it was a summer holiday; for me, it was an escape. Escape from tears & pain.

Blue sky, blue sea & simply blue…

It was a dilemma, a dilemma to choose how to stop thinking about the pain.

A dilemma which either to select an alternative to replace, or choose to face cruel reality… crying till I’m out of tears, crying till I’m used to the truth.

I wished the time will stop; it’s only a wish… a wish that will never ever come true.

If the time stopped, tenderness won’t come to me silently. If the time stopped, I am as free as a bird.

The sand I grabbed in my palm, is in a bottle on room; it’s a charm, protect me from crying for nothing.

For those, thinking it’s just a souvenir; for me, it’s something for nothing…

It’s peace of mind.

A Date

After 21 years of marriage, my wife wanted me to take
another woman out to dinner and a movie. She said I
love you but I know this other woman loves you and
would love to spend some time with you.

The other woman that my wife wanted me to visit was my
MOTHER, who has been a widow for 19 years, but the
demands of my work and my three children had made it
possible to visit her only occasionally.

That night I called to invite her to go out for dinner
and a movie.

"What's wrong, are you well," she asked? My mother is
the type of woman who suspects that a late night call
or a surprise invitation is a sign of bad news.

"I thought that it would be pleasant evening with you," I
responded. "Just the two of us."

She thought about it for a moment, and then said, "I
would like that very much."

That Friday after work, as I drove over to pick her up
I was a bit nervous. When I arrived at her house,I
noticed that she, too, seemed to be nervous about our
date. She waited in the door with her coat on. She had
curled her hair and was wearing the dress that she had
worn to celebrate her last wedding anniversary.
She smiled from a face that was as radiant as an
angel's.

"I told my friends that I was going to go out with my
son, and they were impressed, "she said, as she got
into the car. "They can't wait to hear about our
meeting". We went to a restaurant that, although not
elegant, was very nice and cozy. My mother took my
arm as if she were the First Lady. After we sat down,
I had to read the menu. Large print. Half way through
the entries, I lifted my eyes and saw Mom sitting
there staring at me. A nostalgic smile was on her lips.

"It was I who used to have to read the menu when you
were small," she said.
"Then it's time that you relax and let me return the
favor," I responded.

During the dinner, we had an agreeable conversation -
nothing extraordinary, but catching up on recent
events of each other's life. We talked so much that we
missed the movie.

As we arrived at her house later, she said, "I'll go
out with you again, but only if you let me invite
you." I agreed.

"How was your dinner date?" asked my wife when I got
home. "Very nice. Much more so than I could have
imagined," I answered.

A few days later, my mother died of a massive heart
attack. It happened so suddenly that I didn't do
anything for her.

Some time later, I received an envelope with a copy
of a restaurant receipt from the same place mother and
I had dined.

An attached note said: "I paid this bill in advance. I
wasn't sure that I could be there; but nevertheless, I
paid for two plates - one for you and the other for
your wife. You will never know what that night meant
for me. I love you, son."

At that moment, I understood the importance of saying
in time: "I LOVE YOU!" and to give our loved ones the
time that they deserve. Nothing in life is more
important than God and your family. Give them the
time they deserve, because these things cannot be put
off till "some other time."

Pass this along to everyone with an aging parent,to a
child, to an adult, to anyone with a parent. Here's
hoping today is better than yesterday and tomorrow

Barely Breathing

It was a sleepless night, sorrows & fears hunting me down… I was tired but awaken…

Radio was turned on, with a nice piece of song being played… Hmm… It’s Duncan Sheik’s Barely Breathing...

I received few messages, titled "I shall with her right now"... "I think he's avoiding me"... bla bla titles...

When I open them, I was very shocked & surprised... The messages inside are not related to the title but something like "If you not send/forward this, your mother will die..." or some sort of curses...

What the...???

I hate people who mess up with my family, extremely...

I deleted those messages with anger, wondering why those people have such free time to curse other people, including their friends...

Are those people believe in voodoo, curses, etc etc...???

If I meet those people, I will kick both sides of their a**...

What can I really say is...

Do not send SPAM to your contacts/friends...

Do not curse anyone, even though you hate them so much.

Do not believe in those curse messages.

Be rational & logical...

Period.

Another day just wasted like that… drunk.
